- Diphtheria
- SYMPTOMS. Signs begin with a sore throat and progress to a high fever of
- 100 to 104 degrees F. There will be nausea and swallowing difficulties and
- may be followed by prostration. A grayish membrane that causes swallowing
- and breathing difficulties may appear in the throat or nose.
- CAUSES. It is by an infected person through utensils such as handkerchiefs,
- towels and other objects and by coughing and sneezing of an infected person.
- TREATMENT. Antitoxin to counteract the toxic reaction of the bacteria.
- .Bed rest will be necessary. Antibiotics are often used.
- .Nursing care and alertness for airway obstruction will probably be required
- .A vaccination with DPT should be given all infants.
